HIPS in Florence

HIPS, Florence and the University

  • As educational project, HIPS combines an analysis of the past through the exam of its public representations.
  • The host institution in Florence is SAGAS Department (acronyme for Storia/History, Archeologia/Archaelogy, Geografia/Geography, Arte e Spettacolo/Art and Performing Arts).
  • SAGAS  gathers together several disciplines involved in the study of Cultural heritage (Excellence Project, recognized by the Ministry of Education and Research, 2018-2023).
  • Located in the city centre in an historical building (Palazzo Fenzi), SAGAS offers the opportunities to bring HIPS to the heart of Florence.

  • Florence offers the opportunity to “live” history through an understanding of the changes undergone in the urban landscape as well as through a direct participation in cultural events and performances held in town.
  • The city provides a range of possibilities for HIPS students to learn how to disseminate knowledge via archives, museums, media outlets, broadcasting, digital communication, institutions  (European University Institute, NYU, Florence City Hall, etc.).
  • A specific research line-track of the SAGAS strategic plan of Excellence is “Public History” (MA and PhD levels): HIPS offers the chance to develop educational projects on this line and to combine a variety of teaching skills that would otherwise work on separate track
  • At Sagas Dept there are 100 + full time professors, assistant professors, PhD students: most of them offer courses or are involved in HIPS seminars, guided tours, interactive internships
  • With the support provided by the Laboratory on Cultural Heritage (LIEC) and by the
Centre for Global History Studies (GLOBHIS), our staff is involved in some topics about the historical evolution of cultural traditions, combining traditional research tools with innovative technologies.
  • SAGAS has in force 50 scientific and cultural agreements with various universities in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Asia, extended to TUFS and very soon to other HIPS partners; they enhance the exchange of experience of researchers and students and the transnational dialogue.
  •  All chairs and various participants involved in HIPS hold international projects and grants (H2020, HEurope, ERC, MCurie Action, Erasmus Plus etc.):
  • Cost Action “People in Motion: Entangled Histories of Displacement across the Mediterranean” (PIMO)
  • International credit mobility --> Erasmus plus KA1 107): Armenia; KA2: University Network for Cultural Heritage
  • ERC grant (Armenia)
  • 5 archaeological missions abroad
  • projects of International cooperation supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Jordan, Afghanistan, Myanmar)
